Those who decide to spend their holidays in Campania will be spoiled for choice among a lots of opportunities that it offers, but certainly the five sites, declared Unesco World Heritage sites, are the places not to be missed. Naples strikes visitors for its liveliness, for the splendid colors of the sea, but also for its history that emerges in every corner of the historical center, the largest in Europe, a true open-air museum. For the exceptional nature of the finds and their state of preservation, UNESCO has placed under its protection the archaeological areaS of Pompei, Ercolano and Torre Annunziata, that in 79 AC were completely destroyed by Vesuvius. The volcanic lava caused their destruction but, at the same time, it has allowed the exceptional preservation until today. A unique landscape is offered by Amalfi coast: bays, coves and picturesque villages that, in a miracle of equilibrium, cling to the mountain. A colossal work: four courtyards, 1200 rooms, more than 30 impressive staircases including the famous Scalone d’Onore with 116 steps, and a huge beautiful park as setting. Archeology, nature and traditions are the three distinguishing features of the Cilento and Vallo di Diano National Park, with the archaeological sites of Paestum and Velia and the Certosa of Padula, a crossroads of cultures and peoples since prehistoric times. Paestum is a precious testimony of the past of this land, it boasts the three best preserved Greek temples in the world: the Temple of Hera, the oldest, the Temple of Neptune, the largest, and the Temple of Ceres, actually dedicated to the goddess Athena. In 540 BC, the Phocaeans landed on the coasts of Cilento and they founded Elea (today Velia), ancient town famous for hosting great philosophers like Parmenides. Don’t miss a visit to the Certosa di San Lorenzo, better known as Certosa di Padula, one of the largest monasteries in the world.
